Seniors Can’t Wait

MORE THAN 500 OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S SENIORS ARE CURRENTLY ON A WAITING LIST TO RECEIVE NUTRITIOUS MEALS

Meals on Wheels South Florida joins national #SeniorsCantWait effort to shine a light on growing unmet need

Plantation, FL  (November 15, 2016) – Meals on Wheels South Florida announced today that it has joined Meals on Wheels America’s #SeniorsCantWait campaign to raise awareness for the 501 seniors that are currently waiting to receive nutritious meals in Broward County.

The #SeniorsCantWait campaign is an initiative led by Meals on Wheels America to help shed light on the growing number of seniors who are currently on waiting lists to receive nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks. If left unaddressed, this nationwide crisis will have devastating consequences for not only our most vulnerable seniors and their quality of life, but for our country as a whole through increased healthcare costs and other unforeseen consequences. Meals on Wheels programs can serve a senior in need for an entire year for less than the average cost of one day in the hospital or ten days in a nursing home.

“There is no doubt that the need is severe and growing. Today, more than 10 million seniors – or one in six – struggles with hunger. This is an increase of 65 percent since the start of the recession in 2007,” said Erika Kelly, Chief Advocacy and Government Affairs Officer at Meals on Wheels America. “At the same time, the nationwide Meals on Wheels network is serving nearly 23 million fewer meals than a decade ago due to declining federal and state grants, stagnant private funding, and rising food and transportation costs. With the senior population set to double by 2050, the time to act is now.”

Decisions around federal funding levels for Fiscal Year 2017 have not been finalized. Congress has between now and December 9th to reach an agreement and invest further in Older Americans Act programs like Meals on Wheels.
