Managing Director

This position is one of the visionary leaders of this organization that has the overall responsibility to carry out the mission of Broward Meals on Wheels. In collaboration with the Board of Directors, and the Executive Director, The Managing Director will prepare and implement a plan to transition this agency from a governmental functionary to a community recognized Not-for-Profit agency serving the needy seniors of Broward County.

Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for

1) Direct supervision of Fund Development staff and its programs including annual campaign, major gift/planned giving, public relations, and donor development.  Act as the primary fundraiser for giving campaigns.

2) Direct supervision of Finance and Administration staff,

3) Direct supervision of   the accounting and financial reporting ensuring the accuracy of all fiscal and program report submissions.

4) Direct supervision of Data Processing staff in coordination with needs articulated by the Executive Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Overall Management:

Keeps the Board of Directors informed of all pertinent matters through status reports and open communication including advising Board of staffing and organization needs.

Makes decisions or makes appropriate recommendations to the Board of Directors in accordance with policies and procedures related to the departments directly reporting to Executive Vice President.

Collaborates with the Board of Directors on the recruitment and retention of Board of Directors, ensuring a ladder of leadership that will sustain the growth and development of BMOW.  Assist with the creation and implementation of an advisory board to assist with regular board recruiting, and   to develop a pipeline of resources for the Board of Directors.

Provide team leadership, management, and coordination of the Fund Development function, Finance and Administration function and Data Processing function. Collaborates with Executive Director of Program Services on grant applications and management of program.

Manage all aspects of the internal and external fundraising and communication team.

Responsible   for the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of long-range strategic marketing plans and programs to promote generation of funds.

Develop and implement in collaboration with the Marketing Committee of the Board of  Directors and Executive Director a marketing strategy with effective information, media management systems and tools to increase public awareness and visibility of Broward Meals on Wheels.

Work closely with Program and Finance staff to assess both program and organizational funding  needs and priorities.

Administrates the Person­nel Policies and Procedures, Job Classifications and any and all activities that ensure a professionally run staff. Acts as personnel representative for all agency staff and approves hiring and termination of employees for departments.  Works in direct collaboration with Executive Director of Program Services in the hiring and termination of all personnel under the direct supervision of Executive Director of Program Services.

Financial Management:

Work with the Director of Finance of Broward Meals on Wheels and the Board of Directors oversee all financial and management information systems for BMOW. Prepare annual operating and capital budgets. Ensure that a comprehensive fund development plan is created and implemented that meets the current and projected food and cash needs of BMOW.

  • Manage the activities of BMOW within the parameters of the budget.
  • Oversee all technical support systems, including management information systems, inventory tracking systems and all other information technology and systems.

Fundraising:

Provide leadership to the planning, development and implementation of a campaign for BMOW and to the ongoing fund development program, with the goal of enabling BMOW to continue its important work and ensuring the long-term financial stability of the organization, while meeting current operating needs.

Develop positive and productive relationship with all potential sources of funding, including the private sector, and in partnership with Executive Director of Program Services, local, state, and federal government.

Develop and execute an annual Fund Development plan with a range of goals and objectives designed to increase gift income as well as the participation and engagement of the Board members and Fund Development volunteers.

As agency resources provide, identify, research and “qualify” potential major gift/planned giving     prospects from current donors, former donors, event attendees, etc.  Prioritize those Individuals, corporations, or foundations most likely to consider a significant investment in Broward Meals on Wheels’ operating or capital needs.

In collaboration with Board members, other volunteers, Executive Director, and appropriate staff, implement both short and long-term strategies to cultivate a genuine involvement by the aforementioned donors in Broward Meals on Wheels and secure their generous participation.

Public Relations and Advocacy:

In collaboration with Executive Director of Program Services, serve as the agency’s public spokesperson in articulating the hunger problem and Broward Meals on Wheels mission in ongoing public education efforts:

Regularly speak to church, civic, school, and other groups.

Use all available and appropriate resources to keep BMOW’s work before the public.

Participate in coalitions and other organizations with similar goals.

Represent BMOW to the public.

Position BMOW as the principle agency in south Florida for addressing and resolving hunger and food security issues.

Build relationships with local, state, and federal officials.

Collaborate with other groups involved in hunger and food insecurity advocacy.

When appropriate, advocate constructive policy changes to benefit hungry people.

Keep BMOW constituencies informed about relevant public policy issues.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform other duties and projects as required by management.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

  • BS/BA or equivalent/CFRE a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years in not-for-profit management and/or fundraising leadership position.
  • Direct work experience in the following areas:  (1) annual/capital campaigns, (2) foundation giving/grantsmanship, (3) major gifts, planned giving and endowments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7-10 years progressive fundraising skills with proven track record.
  • 5+ years supervisory/management skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent team leadership ability
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work well with a wide range of people
  • Exceptional communication, writing and public speaking skills
  • Experience in public relations/marketing
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze and interpret information and render independent decisions
  • Demonstrate experience in strategic planning and marketing
  • Demonstrate dependability through good attendance and adherence to planning, timelines and schedules
  • Excellent follow through on projects and deliverables
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness and ability to take initiative in development and completion of projects
  • Proficient in computers and use of Microsoft Office and industry donor contact management software
